CFLs are an excellent step in the direction of energy efficiency. In addition to switching bulbs, homeowners can begin to trade their traditional light fixtures for energy efficient models. ENERGY STAR has certified hundreds of stylish models, including lamps for table, desk and floor, as well as hard-wired fixtures for the front porch, dining room, kitchen ceiling and under-cabinet, hallway ceiling and wall, and bathroom vanity. Several of these models also include dimming, motion sensors, or automatic shut-off. Additionally, various programmable controls and sensors can further improve efficiency by reducing unnecessary light use for these fixtures or existing fixtures.

How It Works
While screw-based CFLs can be used in standard fixtures, dedicated fluorescent fixtures require pin-type or plug in CFL bulbs. These “integrated” fixtures result in the greatest energy savings.
Low Cost Savings Tips:
- Begin by replacing the fixtures that are on for the most amount of time per day.
- Choose fixtures with dimmers, motion sensors, and automatic shut-off
- Even if you cannot afford an energy efficient fixture, begin by using energy efficient bulbs in incandescent fixtures.
